D.C. United and midfielder Markus Halsti have parted ways, ending the Finnish national team player’s brief tenure in MLS.
The sides mutually agreed to terminate his contract, freeing him to return to a European club and clearing roster and salary cap space for United.
The move was not unexpected: Last week, neither Halsti nor the club wanted to discuss his status or whether he was pursuing other opportunities. Summoned for national team duty next week, Halsti left Washington on Tuesday night.
Halsti’s departure opens an international roster slot and dissolves a contract due to pay him $275,000 in base salary and $336,833 in total compensation, sixth most on the team.
