D.C. United continued its offseason overhaul under new general manager Ally Mackay on Tuesday with a swap of right backs, sending Brazilian defender Ruan and cash considerations to CF Montréal for veteran Aaron Herrera.
Herrera, 26, made 19 appearances in his only season with Montréal. The New Mexico native, who made one appearance for the U.S. men’s national team in 2021 before changing his allegiance to Guatemala earlier this year, spent the first five seasons of his career with Real Salt Lake. An attack-minded right back, Herrera has recorded 21 assists over 143 MLS appearances, including 11 in 2021 — good for fifth in the league and first among defenders.
