Darren Mattocks, a Jamaican forward who led D.C. United in scoring before losing his starting job to Wayne Rooney midway through the season, will not return to the MLS club next year.
United does not plan to extend an offer to Mattocks, whose contract expires next month, General Manager Dave Kasper said Wednesday.
Mattocks, 28, scored 10 goals, tied for second on the team, but was relegated to reserve duty after Rooney’s high-impact signing in the summer. He never fully took to the backup role and seemed set on pursuing other opportunities this winter. Mattocks is eligible for MLS’s reentry draft next month.
