Atletico Madrid ousted defending champion Barcelona from the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday as Antoine Griezmann scored in each half for a 2-0 home victory and 3-2 aggregate triumph over two quarterfinal legs.
Griezmann’s 36th-minute header was the difference because, with the aggregate even, Atletico had the advantage on away goals after dropping the opener, 2-1, in Barcelona.
Both teams were fortunate to dodge costly officiating rulings in the dying moments. Andres Iniesta escaped a red card after what appeared to be an intentional handball that led to Griezmann’s 88th-minute penalty kick. In stoppage time, an Atletico handball was ruled to have come outside the box when replays showed a penalty could have been awarded.
