Ali Krieger and Diana Matheson scored 16 minutes apart bridging halftime Sunday as the Washington Spirit defeated Sky Blue FC, 2-1, in Piscataway, N.J. With its second victory in two matches, the Spirit moved atop the 10-team National Women’s Soccer League standings.
In the 40th minute, Krieger, a U.S. national team defender from Dumfries, Va., drove a high ball from well beyond the right side of the penalty area. Whether a shot or cross, it sailed over leaping goalkeeper Caroline Casey and into the far side-netting.
