DENVER -- About five miles south of the Pepsi Center, down Interstate 25 and a short drive from downtown Denver is a reminder of Jim Montgomery's coaching roots. It's there, at the University of Denver, where Montgomery developed the Pioneers into a national championship program and where he ascended from to the Stars head coaching job.
Saturday night offered Montgomery a chance to win an NHL game in the place where he became a household name in the hockey universe. In a 3-2 Stars loss to the Avalanche, it served as the latest notice that Montgomery -- and his Dallas team -- are still developing.
