A first period that going into the midway point was looking to continue to be a back and forth battle. Both teams were simply trying to obtain possession, but it was Tyler Pitlick opening up the scoring for the game in New York. Dan Hamhuis shoots the puck from the point, as it hits off the boards behind the net Tyler Pitlick waiting right beside the crease gets the rebound and sneaks it in past Jaroslav Halak. The Stars strike the first goal of the game and take the 1-0 lead early on.

The Islanders give up a penalty and the Dallas power-play unit takes the ice for the first time of the night.
