Jim Nill announced a pretty good deal with Radek Faksa this week, getting the checking line center for three years at $2.2 million per season.
The Stars general manager needed that, as he's pushing up against the salary cap about as hard as he has in his five years with the team. Depending on how you juggle the 23 positions that can be on an NHL roster, Dallas has about $730,000 left under the $75 million salary cap. That puts the Stars third in the league in salary at this time.
And while this outlay of cash is a great sign from owner Tom Gaglardi when it comes to his belief in the potential of this team to win now, Nill has done a pretty good job of keeping himself flexible.
