How Jim Montgomery could bring some old-school Cowboys draft strategy to the Dallas Stars

FRISCO -- Will new Stars coach Jim Montgomery bring the Jimmy Johnson Effect to the Stars' work in the NHL draft?

Johnson moved from a championship run at the University of Miami to take over as the Cowboys' head coach in 1989. Johnson gave the Cowboys an extra asset in their drafts early in his tenure with his fresh and in-depth knowledge of college players.

Montgomery comes from a similar background: coaching powerful University of Denver for the last five seasons, winning an NCAA title in 2017. Montgomery knows the college game.

The NHL draft, which begins Friday, differs from the NFL because it has a worldwide reach.
