Goaltending used to be a strength of the Dallas Stars. At one time, Ed Belfour, Roman Turek, Manny Fernandez, Marty Turco, and Dan Ellis were all either in the system together or tightly bunched together. The astounding amount of success that group had is unlikely to happen again, but the inability to draft and develop goalies consistently has cost the Stars a lot of games and money.
Under Jim Nill, the Stars have drafted a goalie every single year. They used a late first-round pick on Jake Oettinger last year -- otherwise, all of the other picks have been from the fourth round or later since the first draft under Nill, when they selected Philippe Desrosiers in the second round.
