For two decades, the Dallas Stars have taken an awkward approach to the announcing of big news.
In 1995, I remember getting a call from President Jim Lites shortly before midnight, telling me they had just traded their recent top draft pick, Jarome Iginla, to Calgary for Joe Nieuwendyk. No one knew that within four years Nieuwendyk would capture the Conn Smythe Trophy for a Stanley Cup champion Stars team.
It was only two months later that (as beat writer) I received another call telling me Dave Gagner was being sent to Toronto for Benoit Hogue. This was about 90 minutes after the Cowboys had defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XXX.
