The Dallas Stars have a penalty problem.
The 2017-18 season found the Stars second in the league in total penalty minutes with 307. The Stars had decent-to-good penalty killing for most of the season, ultimately finishing with an 80.8% success rate, 14th in the league, respectively. Giving opponents less opportunities with the extra man is something that should be on the agenda in 2019 as the Stars look under every rock for opportunities to improve.
Jim Montgomery slides in as the new head coach of the Stars from a Denver University club that rarely took penalties. Denver was 56/60 in penalties per game among all Division I clubs last year.
