New Maverick Hammons knows he'll have to work to dispel perception that he's lazy

Way back in the '80s, there was an imposing big man out of Purdue who played mostly with his back to the basket.

He left his mark on the NBA, though not always in the way he'd want.

Joe Barry Carroll was 7-1 and the No. 1 pick of the 1980 draft. He would play more than a decade, be an all-star once and average 17.7 points for his career.

And by the time he was done, he'd earned the nickname "Joe Barely Cares."

Unfairly, perhaps, that's the same reputation that Mavericks' rookie A.J. Hammons is going to have to overcome.
