Mavericks to retire Derek Harper's jersey No. 12 on Jan. 7 when Dallas hosts the Knicks

The Mavericks and owner Mark Cuban have picked a most-appropriate day on which to celebrate Derek Harper's long-awaited jersey retirement.

The ceremony will occur on Sunday, Jan. 7 when, not coincidentally, the Mavericks will host the New York Knicks.

New York was the team to which Harper, at the time in his 11th season as a Maverick, got traded on Jan. 6, 1994. Five months later, Harper helped lead the Knicks to the NBA finals, where they fell to Houston in seven games.

Cuban told The News two months ago that this would be the season in which Harper's jersey No.
