Canales, who has been in an assistant coaching role under Rick Carlisle since 2013, also served as an interim head coach for the Portland Trail Blazers in 2012 after Nate McMillian was fired in the middle of the season.
During his tenure with the Mavericks, Canales served as the head coach for the Mavs’ summer league team in 2015, and helped coordinate Dallas’ offense under coach Carlisle.
Canales’ departure comes about a month after another Mavericks assistant coach left for another position. In May, Melvin Hunt agreed to join the Atlanta Hawks coaching staff, but was quickly replaced with Stephen Silas.
