J.J. Barea didn't make all those trips to Puerto Rico on the Mavericks' team plane because he wanted attention.
He did it to help his homeland in the wake of Hurricane Maria.
The attention, however, was bound to come.
On Monday, the Mavericks' guard was honored with the October NBA Cares Community Assist Award, the league announced. The award recognizes an NBA player each month who best reflects the passion that the league and players show for giving back to their communities.
As is his nature, Barea, who was acknowledged with the award at halftime Monday, dished out an assist when talking about it.
