The Mavericks still consider themselves lucky that J.J. Barea didn't end up in a cast from requiring surgery on his strained left calf.
It was a strong possibility.
But when tests showed the injury would heal without surgery, Rick Carlisle said it would be weeks before Barea, who was averaging more than 16 points and nearly six assists when he got hurt, returned.
It's been 2½ weeks, and Barea has been spotted doing his rehab work in the weight room. He's been moving without a noticeable limp, although Carlisle said Barea's return is not imminent.
"He's doing extremely well, considering his situation," Carlisle said.
