Dirk Nowitzki finishes second on Mavericks in scoring for first time since 2000

The last time a Maverick other than Nowitzki led the team in scoring was the 1999-2000 season, when Michael Finley averaged 22.6 points to runner-up Nowitzki’s 17.5 average.

In recent years, Nowitzki repeatedly has said it was about time for other Mavericks to become the top scorer, and now it’s finally happened.

Monta Ellis finished the regular season with a 19.0 average to Nowitzki’s 17.3.

“We’ve just looked to keep his minutes a little lower each year; that’s the reason,” Carlisle said, adding that Ellis “had a great year.

“But the thing that I can be sure of is that Dirk doesn’t care about the leading scorer.
