The Dallas Mavericks are facing a busy offseason. Here is how the Mavs could create their dream scenario this summer. This plan allows them to add two top tier free agents while also retaining nearly all of their own.
Step 1: Trade with the Cavs
The purpose of this trade for the Mavericks is to acquire J.R. Smith‘s partially guaranteed contract. Smith will only have $3.8 million of his remaining $15.68 million guaranteed.
The Mavs could waive Smith immediately after acquiring him and secure the cap space. Dallas would be wise to use the stretch provision on Smith, spreading out his cap hit over the next three seasons.
