The Dallas Mavericks have several needs to address during NBA free agency this summer. Re-signing Dirk Nowitzki to a short-term deal is priority No. 1, and there's a chance they bring back Deron Williams. The Mavs have never been afraid to swing for the fences in free agency, and with plenty of cap space, they're going to be big spenders. However, signing the wrong player (or players) could send them in the wrong direction. Here are three players they should avoid this offseason:
Dwight Howard
I think this one is pretty self-explanatory. There are rumors that Howard is an option Dallas if they don't sign Hassan Whiteside, but that would be the biggest mistake they could make. Not only would Howard undoubtedly mess up the locker room chemistry, he will demand the ball on offense (which is why he's leaving Houston), and he simply just can't carry that kind of load anymore. Plus, Dallas would have to REALLY overpay for him, which will only set them back.
Brandon Jennings
Dallas could gamble on Jennings getting back to his borderline All-Star play from earlier in his career if they don't sign Mike Conley, but that would also not be a smart move. Jennings hasn't been the player the was before tearing his Achilles, and even when he's at his best, he's an inefficient volume shooter that can be a bit of a ball stopper.
Ty Lawson
Another point guard prospect who Dallas may think is an upgrade over Raymond Felton, the Mavs need to stay away from gambling on Lawson as well. He nearly made the All-Star team just a few years ago in Denver, but seems to have lost all of his mojo since then. Two DUI arrests show he has off-field troubles, and he was a virtual failure with both the Rockets and Pacers this season. He would have a Rajon Rondo-like affect on this team.
