The Dallas Mavericks have exceeded a lot of expectations this season with their play leading up to the All-Star break. Luka Doncic is a top-5 NBA MVP candidate this year thanks to his amazing play and the way he is leading his team to a Playoff spot on a nightly basis. Doncic is putting up historic numbers, and he continues to trend in the right direction despite suffering a few injuries prior to the All-Star break. He has easily earned himself an A+ grade, and that only figures to stay steady if his play does the same.
Kristaps Porzingis joined the Mavericks last season via trade from the New York Knicks. He didn’t play last season, but he has begun to shake off the rust and play some very good basketball for the Mavs. Porzingis looked shaky to start the season, and no one was really sure if he would round into form. However, when Luka Doncic went down with injury, Porzinigis stepped his play up and showed why he deserves his max contract. He hasn’t played quite as well when Luka Doncic has been on the floor, but he is beginning to show signs of being a true second option on a playoff-caliber team.
Tim Hardaway Jr. was one of the biggest question marks on the team coming into this season. No one really knew what his role was going to be, or if he was just going to be traded halfway through the year. However, Hardaway has proven himself as the true third option on this team, especially as a starter. When he is on the floor with Luka Doncic, Tim Hardaway Jr. is almost guaranteed to make some kind of an impact on the offensive end of the floor. The beginning of the year was ugly, as he was chucking up shots without much thought, but now, he has honed it in and is focusing on playing the right way and taking the right shots to help this team win games.
Dorian Finney-Smith, Maxi Kleber and Seth Curry were three of the biggest bargains of the summer, and it is beginning to show. Finney-Smith has proven himself as one of the most reliable wing defenders in the league with an excellent three-point shot. Maxi Kleber has stepped up big in the absence of Dwight Powell, but even when Powell was fully healthy, Maxi Kleber has shown up on both ends of the floor with him rim protection and three-point shooting. Seth Curry has been inconsistent at times this year for the Mavs, but when he steps up, he steps up big. His shot has been pure and now that he is getting consistent minutes in the rotation, Curry is proving himself as a reliable 6th man.
