We’re in the beginning stages of the Dallas Mavericks' offseason preparations, and there are plenty of plots and subplots to follow during July’s free agent push. Here are three things to know about their free agency plans:
**UPDATE 6/30 8:43 PM ET**
Dallas to target Wesley Matthews
Matthews is one of the best two-way shooting guards in the league and is due for a big pay day. He’s another guy who will demand a little less than the max (especially after he suffered a torn ACL this season), but for the Hornets, he could be worth every penny of it. Matthews led the NBA in three-pointers made before he got hurt, giving Dallas a premier threat from the outside. Dallas will likely see what happens with bigger name targets before offering Matthews a contract, but there is definite interest from both sides.
Mavs interested in Iman Shumpert
Shooting guard is definitely a position of need with Monta Ellis leaving Dallas, and if the Mavs strike out on Matthews or can't afford him, Shumpert is their backup option. He's a restricted free agent, meaning Cleveland can match any offer Dallas gives Shumpert, but he'd give the Mavs a lockdown perimeter defender they've been lacking.
Mavs favorites to sign DeAndre Jordan?
Jordan is from Houston and is reportedly very interested in a return to Texas withDallas emerging as the favorite to land him if he leaves Los Angeles. The Mavs have Chandler Parsons recruiting him since both are represented by L.A.-based Relativity Sports and agent Dan Fegan. Dallas wants Jordan to be one of the focal points of their next generation (along with Parsons), and view him as the perfect complement to Dirk Nowitzki - and an upgrade over Tyson Chandler.
Trade for Brandon Jennings on the horizon?
Dallas has been looking for a consistent point guard since Jason Kidd retired, and they may have found one. Jennings appears to be on his way out in Detroit after the Pistons traded for Reggie Jackson, meaning the Mavs should be able to make a move to get him for cheap.
Team undecided on re-signing Tyson Chandler and Amare Stoudemire
Not only do the Mavs have questions to answer at the point, but there’s also the matter of Tyson Chandler and Amar’e Stoudemire’s impending forays into free agency when it comes to the frontcourt. Both Chandler and Stoudemire have expressed interest in returning to the Big D, but Dallas does have to consider the fact that smaller market teams may be willing to overpay one or both big men if other options don’t present themselves. There’s a good chance both could return, but nothing’s for certain when it comes to the NBA and free agency - especially if they land a marquee free agent like Jordan.
