Mavs Rumors: Mavs hopeful about LeBron, free agency constraints a problem?

In today's Mavs rumors and news update, the Dallas Mavericks are still looking to be one of the lucky teams granted a meeting with superstar free agent LeBron James' representation.

According to Sam Amick of USA Today Sports, the Mavs are remaining hopeful about their chances despite numerous reports that LeBron is leaning toward remaining in Miami:

Per Eliot Shorr of NJ.com, "what the Mavericks could offer James isn't clear. They have $26 million in cap space, so if James does take the max ($22 million), they would just have over $4 million left to sign a sidekick for James. Something they would likely have to do, since the Mavericks roster as it currently stands is not good enough to lure James alone."

While Shorr's assessment of the Mavericks' roster is debatable, the salary numbers could end up being a problem for the Mavs regardless.

One of the key factors being discussed about a potential move for James would be a chance to play with fellow free agent Carmelo Anthony. Realistically, the Mavs couldn't offer the pairing a chance to work together in Dallas unless they embarked upon a massive roster shift - something which doesn't seem likely at this juncture.
