The Dallas Mavericks were bounced from the first round of the playoffs by the rival Houston Rockets, but they aren't that far away from being a legitimate championship contender. Here are their three biggest needs this offseason:
1) Find a point guard
Dallas has been looking for a starting point guard they can rely on ever since Jason Kidd retired, but they just haven't been able to find one. The Rajon Rondo experiment was a total disaster, leaving the Mavs dependent on free agency once again. However, in a weak free agency class at the position, look for Dallas to throw everything they have at someone like Reggie Jackson or Mo Williams.
2) Getting perimeter defense
The Mavs allowed the fourth-highest three-point percentage in the NBA this season, something that has to improve drastically if they want to make noise in the playoffs next year. All of the top wing free agents are either restricted or unlikely to leave their current teams, but Dallas could grab a great role player in Khris Middleton or Danny Green while saving some money.
3) Re-sign Tyson Chandler
Dallas needs a rim protector in the frontcourt they can pair with Dirk Nowitzki, but they probably won't be able to land one better than the one they already have. Chandler showed he had plenty left in the tank after joining the Mavs early in the season, and they should be able to sign him to a team-friendly contract.
