Just a week ago, it seemed like Dallas Mavericks guard Raymond Felton was healthy enough to start his four-game suspension for a weapons charge he incurred last season in New York.
Felton's right ankle sprain, suffered during training camp, is healing. However, it's not quite to the point where he his healthy enough to begin serving his suspension.
Because of that, head coach Rick Carlisle and the Mavericks are remaining patient as not to run afoul of the NBA's policy on injured players facing suspension.
“It’s just a little bit slow,” Carlisle said of Felton's rehab, via the Dallas Morning News. “There has not been a setback. We’re not going to mess with it. The rules state that he’s got to be healthy to begin it. And we’re not going to mess with league rules.”
Carlisle wishes that things were different, as he knows how valuable Felton's presence on the floor can be.
“We need him,” Carlisle said. “We need every available healthy guy on our roster that we can get. Don’t think it doesn’t cross your mind when you see Jameer Nelson go down the other night and limp off the floor. But Mother Nature is difficult sometimes. He’s working hard at it. We’ll just keep pointing in that direction and hopefully it will be soon.”
