The Dallas Mavericks are aware that prying Portland Trail Blazers star LaMarcus Aldridge away from the Pacific Northwest next summer will be a tall task.
However, despite all indications (and Aldridge's own words) pointing to him returning to the Blazers, the Mavs will be one of several teams willing to spend max money on LaMarcus when he hits free agency.
From The Dallas Morning News' Eddie Sefko:
But that doesn’t mean there won’t be other teams with salary-cap space to burn that will flirt with Aldridge. The Mavericks certainly will be among them next summer unless something happens to land them a different All-Star level player.
They expect to have maximum, or near-max, money next summer and already will have Chandler Parsons, Nowitzki and Monta Ellis — three marquee scorers — under contract.
Nobody but Aldridge knows whether the lure of returning to his hometown would be something that would appeal to him. For now, there’s nothing to suggest that Aldridge-to-Dallas is anything more than a wild dream.
Stranger dreams have come true (see: James, Lebron), so don't expect Mark Cuban to be shy about pursuing the dynamic big man in free agency come next July 1st.
