Dallas Mavericks point guard Rajon Rondo will have to be tested by doctors in Dallas before he's allowed to return to game action following a scary collision with teammate Richard Jefferson during Saturday's blowout win over the Orlando Magic.
The injury occurred when Rondo was on the floor and the Mavericks stole the ball. Jefferson began to sprint down court, and when Rondo raised his head to get up, Jefferson's knee caught him square in the face, causing blood to squirt from Rondo's nose.
Per Eddie Sefko of the Dallas Morning News, "he will be re-evaluated by doctors, and it’s uncertain whether it will be the Mavericks’ physicians or independent doctors. The Mavericks would not divulge whether Rondo has to pass the NBA’s concussion protocol, although that seems like a possibility given the severity of the hit."
Jefferson was taken aback by the impact.
“Oh, man, I have a pretty big knot on my knee,” Jefferson said. “So you can imagine the impact. It was raised up. I was telling guys, ‘If that’s what my knee looks like, imagine what his face feels like.’
“It was totally a freak thing. And I knew as soon as it happened. We all kind of slowed down because we knew it was pretty serious. At that time, we were all more concerned with his health.
“Hopefully, there’s no lingering effects. He’s a tough little dude. He’ll be back as soon as anybody could be. But damn, it stinks.”
