Once upon a time -- like, say, last year -- we were brought up to believe that you needed a franchise quarterback before you could even get the bandwagon out of the garage. The Earl Morrall Story is as quaint as his flattop, but he might as well have been wearing glass slippers.
For the record: Eight backup quarterbacks have led their teams to Super Bowls. Nine, if you count Terry Bradshaw. Let's not, considering he'd started four years before Chuck Noll famously benched him.
Of the eight, half (Roger Staubach, Jim Plunkett, Kurt Warner and Tom Brady) became franchise types, and half (Morrall, Doug Williams, Jeff Hostetler and Trent Dilfer) ended up with nice stories for their grandkids.
