Stephen Jones on negotiating with Dez Bryant: 'He's emotional about it, he's animated and he's very verbal'

OXNARD, Calif. — So what’s it like negotiating a contract with Dez Bryant?

Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones says it’s like dealing with the wide receiver on the field.

“He’s emotional about it, he’s animated and he’s very verbal,” Jones said. “He wanted to have a long term contract.”

He got one after months of staging an offseason holdout. On July 15, as the deadline to reach agreement on a lengthier deal loomed under the terms of the franchise tag that was applied to the young star, Bryant inked a five-year, $70 million deal. The resolution, Jones said, was influenced by the timetable imposed under the NFL’s CBA.
