FRISCO, Texas -- When news broke of Jason Witten’s four-year extension on Tuesday, the immediate reaction was the Dallas Cowboys did the move to help their salary-cap situation.
That is far too simplistic of a view.
Yes, the Cowboys can gain up to $3.8 million in salary-cap space if they choose to restructure Witten’s contract. They might not choose to do it with $5 million coming off the books once Doug Free is placed on the reserve/retired list, and $14 million comes off the books if Tony Romo is a post-June 1 release.
