If Cowboys can't trade up to draft Derwin James on Thursday, cut a deal for Earl Thomas on Friday

Seven final thoughts (all, of course, subject to change at about 10 minutes to 7 p.m. Thursday) on the Cowboys and the NFL draft:

1. Dallas would love to take Florida State safety Derwin James with its first pick. If he gets past Tampa Bay at 7, then there are a number of teams not looking for a safety that follow, so he will slide. But the Cowboys still will have to trade up because James will never get all the way to 19.

Trading up is the splashy type move that team owner Jerry Jones would dearly love to make with the draft spectacle going on in his stadium.
