OXNARD, Calif. - Authorities in Virginia on Tuesday cleared former Cowboys receiver Lucky Whitehead of charges resulting from a shoplifting incident in his home state last month, citing a case of false identity.

The vindication came too late to save his job in Dallas, and the club is standing by its decision to cut the third-year player Monday before the team's first full training camp practice.

"As far as the whole situation went down, I was blindsided," Whitehead said by phone Tuesday. "I didn't know about a warrant that came about in the first place - clearly, because I wasn't the person arrested.
