CANTON, Ohio -- Gene Chambers was a freshman at Arkansas.
She didn't really know the young man she was going out with that evening other than he was an offensive lineman for the Razorbacks and a lot of her girlfriends from North Little Rock spoke highly of him.
So Gene asked several of those friends to accompany her on her first date with Jerry Jones. The group had dinner, then went to the county fair, where one young man after another won their dates teddy bears at the carnival games.
All except Jerry. Gene turned around when the group made its way to another booth and her date was nowhere to be found.
