IRVING — The Dallas Cowboys used their fifth-round pick (No. 163 overall) to draft a local product in Purdue defensive end Ryan Russell, a former Carrollton Creekview High School player.
Russell (6-5, 273), who was one of the Cowboys’ top 30 pre-draft visitors, is expected to initially compete for playing time with the Cowboys at left-side defensive end.
Russell played his senior year at Creekview in 2009 for coach Kyle Geller, who spent only one season there and is now Burleson Centennial’s coach. Russell said he was raised by a single mother, Marty Moore, who lived in North Texas until last year when she moved to be closer to her son in West Lafayette, Ind.
