Training camp ended for the Cowboys not with a long touchdown pass or field goal, but because a rookie defensive end was able to field a punt.
Head coach Jason Garrett gathered the players around him after an hour-and-a-half of practice Thursday and gave them a proposition: the offensive and defensive lines would each select three players to field a punt. If any one of those six linemen caught the ball, he would end camp a day early and the team would return home.
Randy Gregory was the first player up. The 6-foot-5 rookie didn’t display classic form, but he cradled the ball then went to the ground.
