Cowboys RB Gus Johnson (shoulder): I'll be fine; 'Sometimes the pads can't be your hero'

SAN DIEGO – Cowboys running back Gus Johnson exited the locker room with ice wrapped around his left shoulder, a sprain he suffered in the third quarter of Dallas’ preseason opener.

“It was disappointing,” Johnson said. “You get banged up playing football. It’s what happens. Sometimes the pads can’t be your hero. It’ll be fine.”

The undrafted rookie free agent got the start Thursday. He carried 11 times in the first half and 13 times in the game. His longest run went for 10 yards as he totaled 35 yards on the night.

But his top highlight came in the second quarter as he followed La’el Collins’ blocks into the end zone for a five-yard score.
