The Cowboys were being touted as “Next Year’s Champions” for coming up short, losing to Green Bay twice, including the “Ice Bowl” and then in Super Bowl V to the Colts. But finally, they got over the hump with the 1971 season, resulting in the Cowboys’ first title with a 24-3 win over Miami in Super Bowl VI.
Roger Staubach was named MVP but the signature play occurred on defense as Bob Lilly chased Dolphins quarterback Bob Griese down for a sack and a 29-yard loss, putting a stamp on a defensive effort that lifted the Cowboys to their first title.
