SAN DIEGO – Although you wouldn’t know it by watching Dez Bryant on the sidelines, but Thursday was the Cowboys’ preseason opener. Bryant, still nursing a strained hamstring, wasn’t in uniform. But he was coaching and passing on encouragement like it counted in the standings.

Tony Romo, Jason Witten, Tyron Smith, Sean Lee and Joseph Randle didn’t play, either.

This preseason game against the Chargers was about top draft picks like Byron Jones and Randy Gregory and players trying to make the team like Lucky Whitehead and Gus Johnson.
