Jason Witten’s retirement leaves a massive hole at tight end for the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys current crop of tight ends has very little experience, but there’s one player in particular Cowboys fans are hoping is the answer: Rico Gathers. He shined in 2017 preseason, but an injury ended his season after two promising preseason games. With Witten gone, is Rico Gathers going to start at tight end for the Cowboys?
While that’s the hope (and likely the best possible outcome), there are reasons to doubt that Gathers is the long-term answer at tight end. Cowboys Report host Tom Downey takes an in-depth look at Rico Gathers, complete with film examples of what he does well (pass-catching) and what he needs work on (blocking, focus).
In this video, you’ll see multiple examples of Rico Gathers’ pass-catching ability, route-running, pass blocking, run blocking, strengths, weaknesses and a look at why his rap career might be concerning.
