Last week, there were two different reports that the Dallas Cowboys could move up to the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. Now, there's a report from the Dallas Morning News that the Cowboys won't be trading up to the top spot in the draft.
Rick Gosselin says he doesn't believe the Cowboys will be moving up this year. Not for FSU DB Jalen Ramsey and not for North Dakota State QB Carson Wentz. Ramsey is reportedly at the top of the team's draft board, with Wentz the top QB.
"You trade up inside the Top 10 for a QB or a pass rusher," Gosselin wrote. "I don't see an Andrew Luck or a Von Miller in this draft. You also trade up if you believe you are one player away. The Cowboys aren't one player away. They are going to need that second-round pick to draft a walk-in starter. If they trade up, they won't have that second round pick. I don't see the Cowboys moving up in this draft -- not for any of the players that may await them in that top spot. But over these next few weeks you're going to hear every rumor about every player and most involving the Cowboys. This franchise thrives on that kind of publicity."
Gosselin is right about the team needing a second round pick this year. Moving up would be very expensive for the Cowboys, and they likely don't want to give up picks. If anything, Dallas is more likely to move down and add another mid-round pick or two.
If the Cowboys stay at No. 4 overall, they'd likely hope that Ramsey falls to them. If that doesn't happen, OSU DE Joey Bosa, UCLA LB Myles Jack and OSU RB Ezekiel Elliott are among the players most linked to the Cowboys.
