The Broncos cut Sanchez after he lost the starting quarterback job to Trevor Siemian. Denver was trying to trade him, but the Cowboys waited until he was a free agent because they did not want to take on his $4.5 million salary this season.
Dallas signed Sanchez to be their backup to rookie Dak Prescott, who takes over as the team's starting quarterback in Tony Romo's absence.
The Minnesota Vikings, who are replacing a starting QB of their own in Teddy Bridgewater, were also interested in Sanchez, but ultimately decided to trade for Sam Bradford.
The Cowboys open the season next Sunday against the New York Giants.
