NFL free agency is well under way and the Dallas Cowboys have found themselves at the center of several rumors, thanks in large part to Tony Romo. The Cowboys lost more than they gained in free agency, thanks to limited cap space, but with the NFL Draft coming up, there's still time to make improvements. Here are the latest Cowboys news and rumors you need to know.
Zeke In The Clear Of NFL Investigation?
The NFL has had a rather long investigation about the domestic violence allegations issued against Ezekiel Elliott by his ex-girlfriend. However, Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram told Pro Football Talk that Elliott has been told he's in the clear.
Per Hill, Elliott has been advised by his representatives that he will face no punishment from the league as a result of the 2016 incident, and that it’s just a matter of time before the NFL closes the case.
Now, Elliott being told by his reps is different than the NFL making the announcement. And it doesn't make Elliott's decision to pull down a woman's top at a St. Patrick's Day parade any better. But, it is a welcome sign/report for those hoping Elliott would avoid any discipline. Elliott has maintained his innocence from the domestic violence accusations and no charges were ever filed.
Latest On Tony Romo
The biggest storyline (until the NFL Draft) around the Cowboys and the NFL in general is that of Tony Romo. And according to Peter King of Sports Illustrated, it might not be getting resolved in the near future.
"There's no reason for them (the Cowboys) to be in a hurry with Romo," King said. "The first time that the Houston Texans or the Denver Broncos can have any organized activities within their complex with a player is four-and-a-half weeks away. So I don't know why anybody would feel there needs to be any sort of deadline in the next week or so. I think the Cowboys sound like they're willing to wait. And Romo I think is just gonna have to be patient."
If you're looking for a date where traction could be made in terms of a potential Romo release or trade, it could be from March 26-29th. That's when the NFL league meetings are held in Arizona.
Tyrone Crawford Rehab
The defensive tackle/defensive end is rehabbing from yet another shoulder injury. Last year, it was his right shoulder and this year it's his left. Crawford told the Dallas Morning News that his surgery to fix his labrum is progress and he wants to be back as soon as possible.
"I'm still limited in my upper body," Crawford said. "I can't put a bar over my head or put a bar on the bench press yet. I do a lot of things to supplement it. I work out legs pretty much every day. I try and keep my cardio up. ...With the way my shoulder's been treating me the last couple years, I'm pretty confident I can bounce back."
Crawford hasn't lived up to the five-year, $45 million extension he signed back in 2015, recording just 4.5 sacks last year. The Cowboys hope he can get healthy and be the impact defensive lineman they're paying him to be.
