The Dallas Cowboys suffered a disappointing end to a fantastic 2014 season in the playoffs, but there’s still plenty to be excited about with just a few weeks to go until the 2015 preseason kicks off. Here are three things we've learned about them so far in training camp:
Willingness to gamble on troubled talent is paying off
Say what you want about Nebraska pass rusher Randy Gregory and LSU offensive tackle La'el Collins, but both guys are true first round talents whose off-the-field struggles proved costly. The Cowboys got great low-risk value on Collins as an undrafted free agent, and while Gregory cost them a second round pick, he's a pure athletic game-changer coming around the edge.
Both players have contributed significiantly to the first team in training camp, and they look poised to have a major impact during the season. If the Cowboys can keep those guys' heads in the game, they'll headline one of the most impressive Dallas draft classes in recent memory.
Byron Jones turning heads
Another rookie, cornerback Byron Jones, is also playing extremely well in training camp. During his time with the first-team defense, he has held his own in drills against the first-team offense, including neutralized Dez Bryant on several days. He still has some rookie lapses from time to time, but the coaching staff is ecstatic about his production and potential.
Questions remain in the running game
Darren McFadden, who the Cowboys brought in to be their starting running back, still hasn't participated in training camp, meaning we still don't know exactly what he'll bring to the table. Dallas is counting on their dominant offensive line to open holes for McFadden and Joseph Randle, hoping turning them into productive backs to keep from putting too much pressure on the aforementioned Romo. However, they need to be healthy before we can get our first look at how this experiment will work out.
