The Dallas Cowboys have officially turned their attention to the offseason with free agency and the NFL Draft as the main priorities, especially with the Senior Bowl having just finished and the combine on the horizon. With that in mind, we've compiled the most interesting tidbits around the Cowboys as the draft approaches:
Dallas Targeting Jalen Ramsey?
Florida State's Jalen Ramsey is widely considered to be the top defensive back in the draft this year because of his supreme athleticism, ball skills, and ability to play either cornerback or safety. He's expected to be a top-five pick, and the Cowboys are hoping that he doesn't go in the top three as they plan to take him with the No. 4 overall pick, according to draftinsider.net.
If Not Ramsey, Then Wentz?
Another train of thought has the Cowboys taking QB Tony Romo's eventual replacement with the No. 4 overall pick, and ESPN's Todd McShay thinks that's the direction they will go. In his latest mock draft, he has Dallas taking North Dakota State QB Carson Wentz:
Now that I'm deep into Wentz's tape, I feel very comfortable saying he's a legit first-round talent. He has the height, sturdy frame, natural accuracy, pocket mobility and on-field leadership you look for in a QB. He was 20-3 as a starter at NDSU and won two FCS national titles. You could certainly make a case for the Cowboys taking the best available D-line prospect, such as Oregon's DeForest Buckner. But if Dallas is sold on Wentz (or Goff, if he's available), this could prove to be a very wise long-term investment at the game's most important position.
Could Cowboys Take Dak Prescott?
While Wentz garnered most of the buzz and hype at the Senior Bowl, Mississippi State QB Dak Prescott had a solid effort as well. The Cowboys have been linked to Wentz early, but they also coached Prescott at the Senior Bowl. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports the Prescott is name to keep on eye on for Dallas, especially if they want on taking a QB. Prescott, and the other South team QBs, met with the Dallas coaching staff during the week.
"It went real well," Prescott said. "They just interviewed us, talked about ourselves and watched a little film together. “Just tried to get to know us, all four of the [South] quarterbacks, and it was real brief."
Prescott is a likely mid-day selection and should be on the board between Rounds 3 and 5.
