Cowboys Rumors: Dallas Working On Draft Day Trade To Acquire Earl Thomas?

The Dallas Cowboys are preparing for the start of the NFL Draft tonight and have the No. 19 overall pick, but the team has another major move in mind.

According to ESPN's Dan Graziano, Dallas is planning to make another run at acquiring safety Earl Thomas in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks this weekend.

There’s a sense around the league that the Dallas Cowboys aren’t done making a push for Thomas, who’d fill a major need on their defense. Two sources said the trade discussions between Seattle and Dallas have centered around the Cowboys’ second-round pick (No. 50 overall) but that no deal will be done until the Cowboys figure out whether they can sign Thomas long term. Thomas has one year and $8.5 million left on his contract, which would make him a great deal for the 2018 Cowboys. But dealing a second-rounder for a one-year rental wouldn’t make a lot of sense. If a deal gets struck, expect news of a Thomas contract extension with Dallas to follow.

Seattle is starting a rebuild after cutting Richard Sherman and trading Michael Bennett, and need picks to help them in that process. Thomas also doesn't likely fit into their long-term plans, either.

Following their Week 16 matchup during the 2017 season, Thomas tracked down Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett in the tunnel and told him "if you have a chance to get me, come get me," indicating his desire to play for Dallas.

He is from Texas and played for the Texas Longhorns in college, so playing for the Cowboys (his favorite team growing up) would be a homecoming for him.

Thomas had 88 tackles with two interceptions this past season.
