The Dallas Cowboys drafted Byron Jones in the first round of the most recent NFL Draft, knowing he could play corner back or safety. He's mostly lined up as a safety this season, but the latest Cowboys news is that Jones will shift to corner.
“It’s a familiar place for me,” Jones said of playing CB. “Anytime I can just be out there and start, I’m a happy guy. Can’t complain.”
The Cowboys are making the move because starter Morris Claiborne is battling a hamstring issue. Brandon Carr would shift over to Claiborne's right corner position, with Jones taking Carr's left CB spot. It's the same thing the Cowboys did in their most recent game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
"It’s a heck of a tribute to the guy to be able to do that within the game," defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli said. "He goes out and does it, lines up … that’s a hard transition now. The guy has been a nickel safety, down safety and now a corner. He just has the ability to embrace it and hold the ship."
While Jones has started at safety this season, he's still done practice work with the corners.
“The best part about it even when I was starting at safety I was doing individuals with corner, so I still have a lot of the technique down,” he said. “So I kind of try to use that to my advantage. Just playing corner every day in individuals I can kind of carry it over to the game and to practice.”
Jones has recorded 34 tackles this season. He's broken up six passes, but is still searching for his first INT.
