Cowboys Nation, you need to brace yourselves for the decision that the coaching staff and front office has decided to part ways with former two-time ACC rushing champion, Tashard Choice. That thought could, and most likely will, become reality as early as this weekend when the coaching staff sits down to assess personnel and make their final roster cut-downs. Tashard Choice has found himself in the worst places during this off-season and 2011 training camp.
The ol adage about not being able to make the club from the tub is as applicable to Tashard Choice as it has been to any Cowboys' player this off-season/training camp. He has seen the field exactly 0 times, and that will not bode well as the coaching staff decides on their 53-man combatants for 2011. His absence in South Dade County this evening is the straw to completely collapse the decision camel's back. Thus, is the dilemma that has been Tashard Choice ever since he was a mid-round pick by the Cowboys. The hope was he would buy his time, learn, contribute and eventually garner significant reps and playing time. It just hasn't happened.
His performance in Pittsburgh's Heinz Field a few years back gave everyone hope and encouragement, including Choice himself. The chances to prove himself were certainly there, especially with both Marion Barber III and Felix Jones logging down time with various injuries throughout the years. Yet, Choice could never fully seize and capitalize on his opportunities. Then came the fatal fumble right before halftime in the Redskins game. That one play seemed to seal the fate of Tashard Choice as far as a coaching staff trust factor goes, regardless of how bad the actual play call proved to be. Opportunity has knocked, but he hasn't been able to answer the door.
Proven consistency is the only thing that keeps a player in this League. The inability to produce time and time again is a recipe for early departure, and Choice is this close to receiving his walking papers. He has always considered himself a quality and starting back in this League, and he may get his chance to eventually prove it, but it won't be as a Dallas Cowboy. You can run that one down to the bank. Not with new backfield flavor Demarco Murray dressed and contributing. Choice has to see himself in Murray, and Murry can only hope he takes a completely different path than the short-lived career of Tashard Choice.
<iframe width="420" height="345" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/YTRiC6vE2gM" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Choice's ability was prevalent and on display for all to see, but without reaching out to completely cease a given opportunity, he can only be sadly labeled a "serious tease." Here's to hoping #23 gets a shot with another franchise, and this time he must do everything possible to establish himself on a continuous and consistent basis. It's the cruel, hard reality of the NFL, but Tashard Choice, as a Dallas Cowboy, must go.
