The Washington Redskins stunned the Dallas Cowboys 20-17 on Monday Night Football, thanks to new starting quarterback Colt McCoy and a brilliant field-goal drive to open overtime.
Dallas didn't match, thus cementing the Washington upset.
The big national story coming out of this one will be Tony Romo's departure in the third quarter after taking a knee to his surgically-repaired back, along with his subsequent return in the 4th quarter.
Turning Point: Tony Romo's injury in the third quarter changed the entire complexion of the game. Regardless of the outcome, his back (or rib, depending on who you believe) injury will be the biggest story of this game. If he's legitimately hurt coming out of this, tonight could very possibly have a major effect on the NFC playoff chase.
More importantly to the outcome of the game, Romo's return to the game with time winding down in the fourth quarter ended in disappointment with an incomplete pass on 4th-and-3 in OT.
Key Stat: Despite having RB DeMarco Murray (and his amazing night) at their disposal and the Redskins' former third-string quarterback at the helm, the Cowboys and Redskins were pretty dang close in total yards on offense through regulation. The Cowboys had 60 plays for a total of 373 yards while the Redskins had a total of 56 plays for 351 yards. Can't get much more even than that, and thus we had overtime.
Cowboys Player of the Game: RB DeMarco Murray (19 carries, 141 yards, 4 catches, 80 yards)
Murray is over 1,000 yards rushing for the season at the halfway point. Monday marks his eighth straight 100-yard rushing game, cementing one of the greatest starts to a season that any halfback has ever had.
Redskins Player of the Game: QB Colt McCoy (25-of-30, 299 passing yards, 1 INT, 1 rushing TD)
Despite the pick, McCoy did a more-than-admirable job of managing the game for the upstart Washington Redskins. He was efficient, elusive, and gave the Washington side that has looked listless of late a jolt of energy. And oh yeah, he won the game. Not bad for the former Texas Longhorns QB's return to the state that helped make him a college football star.
What's Next? The Dallas Cowboys host the Arizona Cardinals next Sunday in a battle of NFC powers, while the Washington Redskins head north to face the Minnesota Vikings in Minneapolis.
