The Dallas Cowboys have agreed to a one-year contract extension with defensive lineman Josh Brent as he gets closer to returning to the field for the first time since a DUI incident took the life of teammate Jerry Brown in 2012.

Per Mike Florio of NBC's Pro Football Talk, "a league source has confirmed that Brent and the Cowboys have agreed to a deal that puts Brent under contract through 2015.  The extension was first reported by Field Yates of ESPN.com."

Brent's deal is slated to pay his $745,000 in base salary with a chance to earn an extra $150,000 in incentives based on playing time.

As reported by Florio, "the Cowboys wanted to tack an extra year onto the Brent deal because they’ll get only six regular-season games from him in 2014, which would have been the final year of his contract.  Brent retired in July 2013, before being convicted for intoxication manslaughter."

Commissioner Roger Goodell handed Brent a 10-game suspension upon his return this year.
