Cowboys News: Emmitt Smith says Cowboys have lost "true identity"

In Cowboys news today, Hall of Fame Dallas Cowboys' running back Emmitt Smith is seemingly unimpressed with the direction that the team has taken in recent years.

In an interview with NFL.com on Thursday, Smith was asked about what he thinks is the source of the Dallas Cowboys' struggles in recent years. Smith responded that "the Cowboys have somewhat lost their true identity." Smith added, "I mean, I think the team -- we don't know if we want to be a pass team or a run team."

As the interview progressed, the NFL career leader in rushing yards, rushing attempts, and rushing touchdowns clarified his position, stating that the Cowboys' imbalance between the rush and the pass on offense is a major reason why the Dallas Cowboys have finished at .500 or worse the past 4 years.

In 2013, the Cowboys finished near the middle of the pack in the NFL in passing with 247.1 yards per game, and 24th in rushing yards with 94.2 per game. Beyond 1,000-yard rusher DeMarco Murray, the Cowboys rushing depth chart was extremely shallow, with Joseph Dunbar finishing second by default on the team in rushing yards. He ran for just 164 yards on 54 attempts.
